Full-back Sandy Anderson was considered good enough to earn a professional contract after a trial with the Saints but, with the likes of Bill Ellerington, Len Wilkins and Norman Kirkman, ahead of him in the pecking order found full-time access to the number 2 shirt problematical. When Kirkman took over as Exeter’s player-manager in 1952 he offered Sandy, now in his 30s, a fresh opportunity, but his first-team appearances (six) for the Devon club were even more sporadic and he rounded off his footballing foray south of the border with Southern League Cheltenham. After a few outings for Dundee United he decided to revert to his original engineering trade back in his home town.
