Plucked from Celtic’s Reserves where he had just scored 34 goals, 19-year-old Tommy Spencer was a burly centre-forward whose Southampton career consisted of three consecutive appearances in the 1966 run-in to promotion from Division II, including the two Easter games v promotion-contenders, Bristol City.

In these games, five valuable points were accumulated, at two for a win. But then, the fit-again Norman Dean returned and Spencer left the club, job done, come the summer. At his next stop, Fourth Division York, Tommy scored 20 goals in 57 games and partnered future Saint Ted MacDougall during 1967-68 but, upon moving within that division to Workington, he converted to a defender. After a few more seasons in the lower divisions, he moved into coaching and then to non-league management including two spells at Worksop. In 2001, he joined Sheffield United legend, Tony Currie, to front-up the Blades’

Football-in-the-Community programme, a position that he left in 2008. In 2014 he was back in the Worksop managerial dugout for a one off charity match, his presence helping to swell the crowd.
