Ted MacDougall hit the headlines in November 1971 while at Dean Court, having scored nine goals in a FA Cup-tie v Margate. Manchester United then paid £200,000 – a record for a player leaving the old Third Division – to give him a second chance of making it in the top flight. He had originally been shown the door at Anfield, aged 20, but having earned a name for himself as a bustling prolific goalscorer initially at York (where he first teamed up with Phil Boyer) and then Bournemouth the big stage offered him a second chance. Unfortunately a new manager (Tommy Docherty) and a wife who could not settle, meant he was soon on his travels and he eventually arrived at The Dell a few months after the FA Cup win as Lawrie McMenemy sought to build a side equipped to get out of the Second Division.

Deadly in the six-yard box and a penchant for runs to the near post, Ted soon began to repay his £50,000 fee and in his first season at The Dell, aided by the fetching and carrying Boyer, scored 23 goals in 36 games. He went to AFC Bournemouth late in 1978 and, after a diversion to Detroit, he joined Alan Ball’s Blackpool. He next undertook something of a tour of Hants, Wilts and Dorset non-league clubs before having a long stint in North America, initially in Vancouver, where he coached and became a successful property developer in Vancouver. Returning to the UK, he again worked for Ball, this time as a scout at Portsmouth.

The owner of seven Scottish international caps, Ted now settled in the southern US. He founded his own club, Atlanta Spurs, where he became the club’s director and President. But back to Bournemouth – where he is regarded as a legend – and where, in July 2013, the new south stand was named after him. Ted performed the official opening before the Cherries faced Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly. In October 2018, now living in Florida, he was again at the Vitality stadium as Bournemouth met Saints, and was signing his paperback version of his biography “MacDouGOAL”.
