On his way to Southern League Southampton, Jack Fraser had had plenty of League experience, both in Scotland and England, including a remarkable 1896-97 season with his native Dumbarton, who were runners-up in the Scottish Cup, but who finished bottom of Division II and went out of the League for a while.

A bulky man, he nevertheless liked to play on the wing. He would have to wait until the second half of his third and final season at The Dell, however, to do so regularly. He had started for Saints as a centre-forward and scored a brace on his Southern League debut. A firm favourite with the home crowd, he would have stayed longer had not the purchase of a local tobacconist’s fallen through. Instead, he returned to Scotland, where he won a Cup Winners’ medal with Dundee and a solitary cap. After cutting his managerial teeth at Dens Park, he assisted at Chelsea first as a scout and then later as assistant manager.

When he died in a north London nursing home in 1952 his actual home was still in Fulham.
