The trajectory of Charles Webb, a harness-maker by trade, through Northamptonshire football to the Football League was assisted, it appears, by Kettering’s giant-killing act in the FA Cup in February 1901. When the Southern League new boys knocked out Second Division Chesterfield, Charles was the goal-scoring star. Second Division Leicester Fosse came calling and Charles hardly missed a game of their 1901-02 season. Yet he then went back to the Southern League for three seasons, with Wellingborough, Kettering (again) and Southampton, in turn.

His arrival at The Dell coincided with the return, from his travels, of Archie Turner, with whom Charles boxed-and-coxed for the outside-right berth.

His fine turn of speed, his centres and his long shots sufficed to get him a game in only half of the Saints’ League and Cup fixtures in 1904-05.

Yet he did enough for Dundee to whisk him away for three seasons in the Scottish First Division, of which they were runners-up in 1907. He returned to England to complete the 1907-08 season with a solid run at First Division Manchester City, but then featured infrequently as City were relegated, the following season. Whereupon, he revisited the Scottish Division I, where he ended his career with Airdrieonians. After which, he came home to Northants, where he managed a large baking concern in Rushden.
