A teenage graduate from local football to Leicester City in 1920, Fred Price was part of an exchange deal that took him and team-mate, Dennis Jones, to The Dell, in 1924, with Harry Hooper moving to Filbert Street.

The best that can be said for the move, from Fred’s standpoint, is that his nine Second Division appearances for the Saints in one season were twice as many as he had made, in four seasons, for Leicester in that division and two more than Jones would manage at Southampton.

That was not good enough for Fred who sought, and obtained, a transfer. Having fared better in that same division with Wolves, he had a season with Chesterfield in the Third North, before winding down, in the east Midlands, non-league. Fred was the nephew of Cliff Price and the brother of Jack, who played for Leicester City, Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town and Torquay United. Six of Fred’s nine games for the Saints were in a left-wing partnership with his uncle.
