Starting off in the Central Alliance League with his home-town team, Dennis Jones then averaged 21 games a season with Leicester in the Second Division. He did not do well out of the deal that then took him and Fred Price, within that division, to Southampton, in exchange for Harry Hooper and a fee of £200. He was effectively under-studying right-half Bert Shelley and his first-team opportunities were mainly restricted, in 1924-25, to games in which Shelley deputised at centre-half for Alec Campbell. After that one frustrating season, Dennis joined Mansfield, the Midland League champions – again for just a season – and he kept moving, a season at a time. In retirement, he scouted for both Leicester and Mansfield and had a spell, after the War, as Mansfield’s trainer. By 1939 he had become an insurance agent.
