Having made just 13 appearances at full-back after signing for Saints in four years, the departure of Mike Keeping to Fulham in 1933 opened the door to Bert Roberts becoming a regular over the next five years.

He refused tems for the 1938 season and was sold to Swansea, whose Tom Emanuel made the reverse move, a month later – effectively making the transfer a swop, although no formal exchange was involved. In August 1947 when Saints played at Doncaster, Bert paid a visit to the team’s hotel. He told the Echo that he had moved back to Doncaster when Swansea had been heavily bombed in the war. He had then joined the Army but now following his demob was employed in the carriage works industry. He later became a decorator but died on his 50th birthday of a coronary thrombosis.
