William Sommerville’s competitive career with the Saints was confined to the first-ever Cup run in 1887-88. Of the six matches that it took the team to win the Hants Junior Cup, he played in four games, including the Final, in three different forward positions. He left the club soon after, to study Theology in West Ham. By the turn of the century, he had become Rector of the Church of St George the Martyr at Southwark. He held that post until 1918, whereupon he became the vicar in the Kent village of Otford.
