A Scotland junior international who also had representative honours for Glasgow, Walter Fairgrieve failed a month’s trial with Everton of the Football League’s First Division and duly signed for Southampton, who had just won the Southern League for the second season running. Any hopes Fairgrieve entertained of being part of the Saints’ third successive championship were hindered by his drinking and general misconduct, for which he was suspended. So he hardly played in the first-team, before he was allowed to move on to Luton. His stay at Dunstable Road was even shorter. Returning to his roots, Walter made a whistle-stop tour of Scottish League clubs, before reverting, at Dunfermline, to non-league football. A wood-turner for many years, he enlisted, on the outbreak of war, in the 15th Battalion Royal Scots, but before he could see any action at the Front, he died of an angina attack while in training at Troon.
