Jimmy Yates spent the first six years of the 20th century, alternating, in short spells, between the Sussex side, St Leonards United, and Southampton of the Southern League. St Leonards were newly-elected into that League’s Division II when Yates had his second coming with them in 1905-06. So he was well-placed to judge that Horace Glover, an architect’s assistant who had just joined the club as an amateur, would make the grade at The Dell. His judgment was sound.

A decisive tackler and excellent distributor, Glover immediately made Southampton’s left-back position his own, becoming a Southern League regular and never missing an FA Cup-tie in his five seasons at the club.

After which, he remained in the Southern League with West Ham, until he returned to Southampton and played, for a while, for Hampshire League Boscombe.

Between the Wars, he worked first for his father-in-law, R.C. Hallett, a scrap-merchant, and as a stevedore in the Docks and he was still there in 1939. He played for the ex-Saints in the 1920s and also attended the 1935 Jubilee dinner (see right). During the Second World War, he went back to Ashford, where he worked on the railways until 1945. Whereupon, he retired to live in Milton Road, a stone’s throw from The Dell.
