Tyler Dibling played for Saints U21s aged just 15, and a couple of months after turning 16, he scored a hat-trick of near-identical goals against Newcastle U21s at St James’ Park. That feat brought him national media attention. Gary Lineker posted the “eyes” emoji when uploading a clip of the goals on social media, and from then on elite clubs were keeping diligent tabs on his development. Direct running and an ability to hold onto the ball while powerfully dribbling through defences were his two most visible assets and while at St Mary’s he represented England all the way through from U16 to U21 level.
Eventually Chelsea prised him away, with a promise of a lucrative contract once he turned 17, but his stay at Stamford Bridge lasted a little more than a month, as homesickness kicked in and Southampton and Chelsea worked out a deal which enabled him to return to his comfort zone. As Southampton endured a wretched return to the Premier League in 2024, Tyler was the one bright spark, but even his form waned as the unhappy season unwound. Saints were keen to extend his contract which ran out in 2026, but when it became obvious he had no intention of signing a new deal, it was decided to let him leave, once again, with Everton eventually coming up with the required £35m + £5 add ons fee.
