Tom Hargreaves arrived at The Dell with Martin Dunne, who had been his wing-partner both at Oswaldtwistle and Accrington. But while Dunne went straight into the Southern League side, Hargreaves had to wait until he was tried out in the Southern Charity Cup. He did not impress and returned to Nelson in Lancashire where he became a telephone inspector. After war was declared he joined the East LancsReg’ 87^th Coy Machine Gun corps and lost his life at Cambrai. He is commemorated at Louverval.
