Between spells in the Southern League with Swindon and Reading, Tom Davies had played in the Football League’s First Division with Nottingham Forest. But it was from Salisbury City then in Southern League 2 that he came to Southampton.

A dapper little forward, he got off to a good start in the first team and quickly became a favorite with the crowd.

But he was soon out of contention and playing Reserve football, in the course of which he broke a leg at Eastleigh in March 1910. That put paid to his football career and he soon became a coach-finisher at the carriage works in Eastleigh. He continued in that trade when he enlisted in 1915, serving as a corporal in the Army Service Corps at Grove Road, Wimbledon. In 1939 he was back in his native Swindon working for G.W. Railways as a carriage finisher. In January 1956, his presence as a spectator was noted in the press, when and Southampton drew 1-1 at the County Ground. Living in Wootton Bassett he was a regular at Swindon home matches even though he was well into his 70s.
