An England schoolboy international and an outstanding youth player, Terry Spinner progressed through the Saints’ ranks to top-score for the Reserves both in 1971-72 and 1972-73. The latter tally include five goals v Bristol City’s Reserves in August 1972, when he enjoyed the presence of Terry Paine, working his way back from suspension. Spinner would get only two chances, however, to feed upon Paine’s first-team service: when Ted Bates fielded a very young side at Stamford Bridge in April 1973; and when Lawrie McMenemy brought him off the bench, in a futile gesture, as the Saints were walloped 7-0 at Ipswich, the following season. And that was that. Part of McMenemy’s summer clear-out, Spinner moved, on a free transfer to Third Division football.

After a season-and-a-half of infrequent appearances, his contract was cancelled and, come the summer, he moved into non-league football. In 2013, he was working in the lift-and-crane-hire business, with Dewsbury and Proud Ltd at Coseley, near Walsall.
