Stig Johansen grew up in a fishing village in the Lofoten Islands, north of the Arctic Circle. After scoring 38 goals in 22 matches to help Lofoten lift Norway’s Division III title, he moved to Bodø Glimt on the mainland.

The goal-scoring continued and he had been capped three times before Southampton reportedly fought off interest from Newcastle to sign him for £600,000.

The Saints made an awful start to the 1997-98 season and Stig struggled to make an impact. With David Hirst’s arrival, Stig’s first-team days were over. He was loaned to Bristol City and then sold, come the summer, to Helsingborgs. After which, he went back to Bodø Glimt, until he retired in 2009, only to return on a one-year contract in 2011. Following a second retirement, he moved into coaching the club’s youth squad. On 31 August 2014 Johansen made a comeback for his home club Kabelvag,  he just played one game to finish his career for good. He also opened their newly-built pitch.
