A Hampshire county player with Romsey Town, Sid Grover joined Southampton’s ground staff as an amateur forward in November 1930.
Although he failed to break into the Reserves that season, he leap-frogged into the first team when a players’ strike – as explained in Fred Allan’s profile – left the manager short of personnel for the Rowland Hospital Cup match in May 1931. His performance against Portsmouth was good enough to gain him a professional contract but, after seven Reserve outings in 1931-32, he was not re-engaged and returned to the Hampshire League, eventually back at Romsey. In 1939 he was an Eastleigh-based electric motor fitter.
