Blink and you would have missed the fair-haired Sam Hoskins’s first-team bow when he came on, very late, for Guly Do Prado in a 3-1 Carling Cup triumph at Swindon – in the few remaining seconds that he was on the pitch, he did not touch the ball. He had three other outings from the bench but all were away from home and none were in the league.

Top scorer for the U-18s in 2010-11 and joint-top scorer in the Barclays U-21 Premier League in 2012, he proved to be a predatory finisher. Having come on at Stevenage in the Capital One Cup in August 2012, he then joined them on loan, for the rest of the season, when the January 2013 transfer window opened only to permanently join newly-promoted-to-the-Championship, Yeovil when Saints released him in the summer. He has since made over nearly 200 appearances for Northampton as they have yo-yoed between League One and Two.
