A powder-mill runner in his early days, Peter Cowper had been with five Football League sides in seven seasons, yet was still only 27 when he arrived at The Dell. Manager Arthur Chadwick, having “dashed to Lancashire” to complete the signing told the Echo that he considered

“that the new winger will take a lot of keeping out of the side”.

Despite a decent scoring record for the Reserves – 27 goals in 45 games – he would have only five run-outs, most of them at outside-right, for the first team. He had made only two of those appearances when, in February 1931, he requested a transfer. When it was granted, 13 months later, Peter returned to the north-west, where he added two more League clubs to his portfolio, before going non-league. In the 1950s, he scouted for Blackpool, where his son-in-law, Jackie Wright, was a full-back. He was working as a caretaker at Clifton Hall, on the Fylde, when he died.
