Matthew Marshall, who followed his cousin George Marshall to St Mary’s, had two things in common with George: he worked at the Ordnance Survey office and was capable of playing in any defensive position. Unlike his cousin, he had to put his versatility to use in the Reserves – regularly for five seasons – and was restricted to one run-out with the first-team, at right-half (with George at left-back) in the Portsmouth & District Cup Final, won by Freemantle, in 1894. In 1939 he had become a builder’s labourer in Christchurch.
