Matt Targett was a bit of a rarity in modern football for Southampton in so much that he is a local lad who actually managed to make more than 50 appearances for his home town club. That was an impressive feat considering that standing in his path was England international left-back, Ryan Bertrand, but Targett was a more than adequate stand-in with a nice left foot and a good engine.

He had gone to Fulham on loan and was such a success, helping the Cottagers reach the Premier League, they wanted to buy him outright, but Saints wanted to hold onto him but then changed their minds on the last day of the 2018 summer transfer window to find that Fulham had had to make alternative arrangements. Staying another season did at least give him the opportunity to score his one and only goal for Southampton with a magnificent far-post header against Bournemouth, that some old-timers recalled had shades of the great Ron Davies about it.

He got his move the following summer however joining Premier League newcomes Aston Villa for a fee in the region of £13m. In December 2019 as Saints prepared to play Villa  away, Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted that in hindsight he would have kept Targett but let him go because he thought he had replacements lined up in the summer which in the end didn’t materialise.
