Martin Caceres was a widely-traveled, much-capped Uruguayan defender who arrived at St Mary’s after the January transfer window had closed. He was a free agent as his contract had expired at his previous club, Juventus, after he ruptured his ankle tendon. Claude Puel signed him on a five-month deal because Virgil van Dijk himself had suffered a serious ankle injury following a nasty challenge from Leicester’s Jamie Vardy which would sideline him for the rest of the season. Caceres’s availability was a bonus, although, in the end, Jack Stephens stepped into van Dijk’s boots so competently Caceres was only called upon on the one occasion and he returned to the continent eventually joining Juventus for the third time.
