Born in Austria to Ghanaian parents Kevin Danso’s family emigrated to the UK when he was six. Most of his early football education took place at the MK Dons academy but when he was 16 he took himself off to Germany to complete the learning process and simultaneously ensuring he kept up his studies to complete his ‘A’ levels.
He became Augsburg’s youngest ever player (18 years 165 days) in March 2017 and within two years had won his first full cap for the country of his birth, having represented them at every level since the U15s.
A big strong defender he joined Southampton on a season-long loan in the last few hours of the 2019 close season transfer window shutting.
The BBC billed him as a centre-half at the time of his arrival and most assumed that would be where he would be deployed at St Mary’s
but the actuality was that whenever he was picked, which wasn’t very often he played at full-back and did not look comfortable out wide. By the time football was suspended three quarters of the way through the 2019-20 season he had only made three Premier League starts, all at full-back. Southampton had negotiated an option to buy at the season’s conclusion, but they declined to make the move permanent and Kevin found himself back once more back in the Bundesliga, albeit on another loan. Speaking to The Athletic website in June 2022 he said “I wanted it work out, but when you play out of position you maybe need the extra focus that I didn’t have. I should have concentrated more and read the game more. I tried to do that, and when it started well, I took a bit of a backseat and became complacent”.
