Joining Chelsea as a 10-year-old, Kayne Ramsay became part of Southampton’s academy in 2017 before signing professional terms in September 2018. At the end of December, that same year, he was introduced to Premier League football by Ralph Hasenhuttl, himself experiencing his first taste of English elite football, having recently becoming Saints new manager just a fortnight before. Ramsay was only 18 years and 81 days old when he was named in the side to face Manchester City, thus becoming the youngest player that season to make his full debut in the Premier League. At the time Hasenhuttl described the young full-back as “a jewel”.

But this particular jewel did not sparkle enough for Hasenhuttl who was to give the the boy from London’s East End just one more start in the League, which ended in a horrendous 9-0 defeat at Old Trafford. From there on in it was three loan moves, the first to Shrewsbury where the then manager Sam Ricketts enthused –

He is extremely athletic, can carry the ball and drive play forward.

Further loan moves to Crewe and Ross County, then in Scotland’s Premiership, followed before a permanent transfer to League Two’s Harrogate Town was agreed. Their manager, Simon Weaver, was also excited by his new signing, telling the local paper –

He’s quick, really strong with a great build on him for a wing-back.
