Starting and finishing his career on his native west coast of America, goalkeeper Kasey Keller spent 16 years in Europe, totalling 500-odd appearances across the Football/Premier Leagues, La Liga and the Bundesliga, while being capped over 100 times by the USA. In which context, it seems almost impertinent to mention his four games for relegation-bound Southampton in 2004.

But with Antti Niemi injured and Kasey out of favour at Tottenham, his one month’s loan was a good match, all-round. And it looked especially good as he stepped unflappably into the fray v Portsmouth and the Saints recorded only the second win of their Premiership season. The side picked up but one more point during his stay, however, and manager Steve Wigley was fired at the end of it. Back in his home state of Washington, and long retired (2011) from the Sounders’ goal, he works for the club as a commentator and sometimes as an analyst for ESPN.
