The story of how two soldiers, Pte Jock Fleming and Sgt John McMillan, were signed from the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders and fielded in the club’s second-ever FA Cup-tie has been told, in all its legalistic detail, in Fleming’s profile. The outcome for the two men was initially the same: they would never play for St Mary’s again; and they would soon be posted to India. But whereas Fleming would survive India and then have a taste of League football, McMillan contracted enteric fever and died, making him in all probability the first Saints player to pass away.
