Although he had been with two First Division clubs – Sunderland and Sheffield United – John Hogg had made only three appearances in the Football League when he joined Southampton. Occasionally used as a centre-half in their Southern League side,

he was more at home as a destructive right-half.

Having featured regularly for a season-and-a-half in that League, he had a poor game, playing out of position at right-back, in an FA Cup defeat by Sheffield Wednesday in February 1907. While Wednesday would go on to win the Cup, the hapless Hogg would never play for Saints’ first team again.

He returned to the north-east at the end of the 1907-08 season to play non-league football, from colliery to coast, culminating at Parsons Works, the works-team at the Newcastle engineering firm where he was working as a fitter and would become head-millwright. John had two brothers who played first-class football. Bob’s career in the Football League included a substantial number of appearances for both Sunderland and Blackpool, but John and he were eclipsed by Bill, who won three England caps and four championship medals: with Sunderland in Division I; and, in three consecutive seasons, with Rangers in Scotland.
