“Jerry” Mackie, who would spend the 1920s in south-coast football, had previously played for Motherwell, his home-town club, in the Scottish First Division and for some leading Scottish clubs during the First World War. Arriving at Fratton in time for Portsmouth’s first season in the Football League, his scoring partnership with the prolific Willie Haines was an acclaimed feature of Pompey’s promotions to the Second Division in 1924 and to Division I in 1927. It did not survive the club’s first season in the top flight, however, Mackie moving to Southampton in March 1928, as Bill Rawlings left for Manchester United.

Jerry started in some style, with a hat-trick on his home debut and six goals in seven games by the season’s end.

Come the close season, Haines rejoined him and, when free of injury, they enjoyed two seasons together again. On 14 March 1931, Jerry reached a personal milestone when he scored his 100th League goal in a 5-1 defeat of Bristol City.

Four games later, that League career was over and he quit football. He soon took up bowls and became licensee at the Regents Park Hotel in Shirley, Southampton. He remained there for 24 years and then retired to Bognor Regis in the mid-1950s, where he continued to enjoy his bowls.
