Having had a couple of games in the First Division for Wolves, Jack McDonald joined Third South Bournemouth in the summer of 1939. Which meant that he would not be establishing himself as their outside-left for another seven seasons, during which time he would guest widely, including twice for Southampton.
When “official” football resumed in 1946, Jack had two seasons at Dean Court, scoring goals at a rate of nearly one every other game. Whereupon, he moved to Fulham and was part of the side that overtook the Saints in the 1948-49 run-in, to become Second Division champions.
Life in the top flight proved tougher, though, and when Charlie Mitten arrived in the middle of his fourth season, Jack was soon on his way – to Second Division Southampton.
He played in the first dozen games of the 1952-53 season, living up to his reputation as a scoring winger with a run of four goals in eight games.

That proved to be the extent, however, of his appearances on the Saints’ left wing and of his goal-scoring. He had a few games at centre-forward later in a season that ended in the side’s relegation and Jack’s departure to Southend. At the end of a single season with them in Division III(S), he quit the League game for Southern League football in Dorset, returning to The Dell in 1956, when Weymouth paid an FA Cup-visit. After working as a PE teacher in Bournemouth, Jack lived in Elgin for a while, but retired to Ryde on the Isle of Wight in 1992.
