Leicester City was the breeding ground for arguably two of England’s finest goalkeepers, Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton, so when 16-year-old Ian Andrews signed on after impressing while playing for Mansfield Youth there was every hope he would go on to emulate the famous duo. In 1986-87 he featured in every game, but Leicester were relegated and a new manager, Bryan Hamilton, brought Paul Cooper with him from Ipswich. So Ian moved to Celtic for £330,000, which was only £20,000 less than the then record for a goalkeeper (David Seaman QPR-Arsenal), but he had an indifferent start at Parkhead and Chris Nicholl decided to bring him to Southampton for £200,000 after an initial loan spell.
With Tim Flowers growing in stature and then the arrival of Dave Beasant, Ian opted to move on to Mel Machin’s Bournemouth, but while there his wife passed away from cancer, leaving him with a one-year old young son and so he decided to take a sabbatical from football. Later, after gaining a degree in physiotherapy at Salford University he resigned for Leicester on a monthly basis while he eased himself back into the game and then Paul Tisdale, who he had known at The Dell, asked him to join him, first at Team Bath and then as Exeter’s physio. He hankered to return to Nottingham however and in 2010 he opened up a physiotherapy clinic in Bingham which he told the Leicester City website in 2016 was going from “strength to strength with over 2000 members”.
