Henry Belcher’s first-team career with Southampton lasted three days, during which he managed to play in two local derbies. Having spent the 1931-32 season in the Cheshire League with Witton Albion,

he came to The Dell highly recommended.

He did well enough in the Reserves’ final game to be selected for the end-of-season charity Cup games against Portsmouth (see scrapbook section). Although Portsmouth gave a debut in the first game to Bill Rochford, a future Saints’ captain, they were otherwise at full strength for both matches. So right-half Belcher was marking Jimmy Easson, a Scotland international (and future Southampton trainer). He “could not cope with the wiles of Easson and [his wing-partner] Cook,” who scored the majority of Pompey’s goals, between them, over the two games, and he was allowed to rejoin Witton. In 1939 his occupation was listed as an insurance agent.
