An ironmonger’s assistant in his father’s business in Farnborough, Harry Turner came to The Dell in April 1900 for a trial in a Southern District Combination match against Chatham, in the hope of following in the footsteps of his brother, Archie Turner.

The Echo approved of the way he “centred with great judgement and shot on one or two occasions with deadly accuracy,”

but the club did not share Harry’s opinion that this entitled him to the same pay as his brother. So he returned to Farnborough for three seasons (see scrapbook section), before chancing his luck at Southampton again in 1903-04. When his brother returned, the following season, Harry played three of his five Southern League games in the same forward line as Archie. And he scored three of his four Southern League goals for that season in those three matches.

When Harry scored twice, and Archie once, in a 4-3 home win v Swindon in September 1904, they became the first – and, to date, only – pair of brothers to score in the same game for the Saints. But he spent most of 1904-05 and the whole of 1905-06 in the Reserves, winning a Hampshire Senior Cup-winners’ medal in 1905. After which, he had a two-match fling with Southern League Reading between spells with South Farnborough and their neighbouring Athletic, playing with his brother as the latter club had its brief adventure in the Southern League’s Division II.
