Spotted and recommended to Southampton by Sid Kimpton’s policeman-brother, John, Harry Hunter was a detective based in Clapham. That made it difficult for him to contemplate doubling up as a footballer, anywhere outside London. So, even though he impressed in the Saints’ goal, when they were playing a Southern Alliance match that merely required him to cross the river to Griffin Park, that was that: he could carry on sleuthing.  He joined the Royal Flying Corps on the outbreak of war, reaching the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Fatally wounded in 1917, he is buried at the Wimereux Communal Cemetery in Pas de Calais.
