Recruited from Geneva Cross, the Medical Staff Corps team at Netley Hospital, “Ginger” Price took a while to feature regularly in the St Mary’s first team, whose fixtures still consisted mainly of friendlies. But, then, he had never played “footer” before arriving at Netley.

Confident that “his ability as a back is too well known to need comment,” the Saints’ 1894 Handbook rejoiced that “his kicking is safe and tackling sure,” while “deploring an accident that has kept him from helping us in several of our recent Cup-ties.”

That “accident” caused a serious leg injury in January 1894, which limited Ginger’s appearances to just six, mostly at full-back, in the county’s various Cup competitions. Having left the army in October 1900, he was a carpenter at the time of his premature death, two years later, aged only 33.
