When Geoffrey Wilson stood in as the Saints’ centre-forward – for three consecutive Southern League matches, it was a minor interlude in the career of a footballer with impeccable credentials for the amateurism of the day.

Captain of the first XI at Rossall School, a public school founded by a clergyman for the sons of clergymen, which Geoffrey was, he then played for the Corinthians from 1897 to 1902 and sometimes the Casuals, too, but only when his medical studies allowed. Such was the calibre of amateur football that, when Geoffrey scored on his England debut at inside-left in March 1900, his fellow-Corinthians, Tip Foster and Gilbert Smith, were alongside him.

Geoffrey won a second cap to equal the 1884 haul of his older brother, Charles, who was the greater all-rounder, having also represented England at rugby. Both brothers played Minor Counties cricket for Lincolnshire. Geoffrey came to Southampton’s aid, recommended by another Corinthian, CB Fry. He then returned to his studies, qualifying as a physician and surgeon in 1902 and playing, for a while, for London Hospitals. After which, he went home to Lincolnshire, becoming Assistant Medical Officer at the Kesteven County Lunatic Asylum.
