The St Mary’s career of the versatile Frederic Crossley consisted of four games in the Hants Junior Cup. At inside-right in the Saints’ first-ever Junior cup-tie at Totton in November 1887, he was at left-half in the drawn Final against Southampton Harriers. He missed the replay, in which the Saints won this trophy for the first time, but made it into the photograph of the winners (below), in which he is seated at the feet of Ned Bromley, his former Cranleigh school-mate. He was again at left-half when the Saints started their second Junior Cup winning-run the following season, but there his Saints career ended. Frederic emigrated to New Zealand’s North Island in 1890. Having worked there as a carpenter in Cardiff and farmed briefly in Kapuni, he retired to Wanganui.
