Although he had been at four Football League clubs, Fred Wheeler was still only 24 when

he came to The Dell, “well recommended” by one of the club’s scouts.

Unable to get a run at inside-left, a position for which he was competing with Arthur Holt, Fred was given three games at centre-forward, come November. He responded with four goals, including a hat-trick inside 27 minutes against Bradford. But then it was back to spasmodic appearances at inside-left. And so he departed for further attempts at Second Division football, but was soon playing non-league.In 1939 he was a plate layer labourer with Great Western Railways at Bilston.
