A small, fair-haired left-winger, Fred Hollands was among the professionals imported by St Mary’s in preparation for their inaugural season in the Southern League. After his first game when Connaught Rangers were beaten 12-0 in a friendly, the “journalist “Scratcher” writing in the Southern Referee magazine wrote “I was pleased with Hollands. He certainly is not a showy player, but he very seldom failed to centre and his passing was well-judged”. A nimble dribbler, he duly played in all bar the last game of that 1894-95 League season and throughout the Saints’ first-ever run to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. But he then returned to Millwall – who had just become the first champions of the Southern League – for a short stint, before being re-instated as an amateur to play briefly for Fulham, a club some years away from the status being enjoyed by the Saints and Millwall. He went on to become an electrical engineer.
