Frazer Richardson was signed from Charlton on a three-year deal, on the back of being named in the PFA’s League One Team-of-the-Year, for a sum reported to be around £450,000. He had been at The Valley only a year, having arrived there from Leeds, where he had been their captain and longest-serving player.

Essentially a right-back, he could also play further up the field, when required, but before his voyage on the south coast could be launched, he dislocated a shoulder in pre-season training, which delayed his debut until late October.

He remained on the periphery of the team, that season, making only 17 starts, as manager Nigel Adkins more often preferred Danny Butterfield at right-back. But then, in his second season, 2011-12 – which culminated in promotion to the Premiership – he was first choice on a more satisfactory 33 occasions. The arrival of Nathan Clyne, come the summer, meant, however, that Frazer had to play second fiddle in the final season of his contract, at the end of which he was released. His last club was Doncaster but he had only been there a few months when he badly damaged knee ligaments which brought his career to an end.
