Outside-right Frank Wright, who had represented the Birmingham Association while playing for Hamstead Colliery, arrived at The Dell early in the Saints’ inaugural season in the Football League. He showed some early promise in the Reserves but, after a poor showing on his first-team debut, his second-team form seemed to suffer. Released at the end of the season, he returned to Hamstead Colliery, where he resumed his football as a permit-player. The colliery had been the scene of a mine fire in 1908 when26 men had lost their lives (see below). In 1939 Frank was a post-office engineer in Birmingham.
