A big-built centre-back of no little ability, Fitz Hall has stood out from football’s common herd for two other reasons. First, his nickname: “One Size” – obvious enough when you think about it, but so inventive when compared with the general run of dressing-room monikers. Secondly, he had featured, aged 16, in a French sci-fi film, The Fifth Element, starring Bruce Willis, a major box-office success in the US.

He had originally caught the eye of Oldham manager, Iain Dowie – not on the big screen, but while starring for Iain’s brother, Bob, at Ryman League Chesham. Fitz made the leap to League One with such assurance that he was voted into the PFA’s 2003 Team-of-the-Year for that division.

Whereupon, Southampton invested £250,000 to catapult Fitz up to the Premier League, albeit as cover for Claus Lundekvam and Michael Svensson.

He wasn’t much needed, however, and so, a year later, Southampton cashed-in on him, making over £1m on the deal that re-united him with Dowie, by now in the Premiership at Palace. Fitz has since been the object of two more big-money moves, moving from relegated Palace to Premiership Wigan and then gaining promotion to the top-flight with QPR in 2011. But having seldom featured in the second half of their 2011-12 season, he signed for Championship Watford, come the summer, on a one-year deal and then, after being released, twice more joined the Hornets on a short-term arrangement. He finished up playing centre-forward with some success for the amateur Percival FC in Essex. Following retirement he became a “football consultant” for Base Soccer Agency.
