Signed as an amateur in 1933, Eugene Bernard kept goal regularly in the club’s Reserve and “A” teams, before getting his first-team debut on the opening day of the 1936-37 season. Two days later, he made his final senior appearance, whereupon the regular ’keeper Bert Scriven returned from injury. Eugene was robbed of England amateur trials by a bad hand injury, which precipitated his retirement from League football, although he did return to the Saints’ goal a few times during the War when he was a special constable. He had two post-war spells working with the club’s youngsters, wound down with Bitterne Nomads (see scrapbook section) and was later employed as an insurance inspector.
