Derek Allan’s competitive first team career with Saints amounted to just eight minutes after he replaced Matthew Bound in a 1-0 defeat by Manchester City in the last home game of 1992-93.

Aged 18, he had arrived as “one for the future” just a few months before, but with a series of niggling groin injuries holding back progress it was left to Jimmy Case, managing Brighton to reignite the young central defender’s career and he made over 80 appearances for the Seagulls, before dropping down to the Conference and a part-time job with a stationary firm.

He then returned to Scottish football and in 2002 won the Scottish League Two title with Queen of the South but due to more injury problems retired aged just 30. In December 2017 he became an associate director of a Glasgow-based Recruitment Consultancy.
