Davie Steven twice ventured, from his native Dundee, to England. He was only 18 when he signed for First Division Bury. After his three first-team games for the Shakers in 1896-97, he fell out with the club, who refused to release his Football League registration. Which didn’t stop him moving briefly to Dundee in the Scottish League and then to Southampton in the Southern League. His season-and-a-half with the Saints began with a solid run at inside-right, but David featured more spasmodically in 1898-99. Whereupon, he returned to Dundee. He seemed to have settled at last, but he suffered a fatal heart attack in April 1903, shortly after his 25th birthday. The day before he died he saved a child from imminent danger of death under the wheels of an oncoming horse and cart. It is never proved it was this action that was responsible for the attack 24 hours later but it is surely something of a coincidence if it was not?
