Full-back David Gunter had a tough debut, mainly because Saints were well beaten at Loftus Road four nil but according to the Echo he “had no cause for self-reproach”.
His manager, George Roughton declared “I thought Dave did very well in his first game, I am well satisfied”.
He was the younger brother of Phil Gunter, a Portsmouth defender who notched up over 350 games for Saints rivals. Unfortunately Dave’s career was less illustrious, mainly because his path to first team selection was blocked by Tommy Traynor and after spending the whole of 1956-57 in the Combination side, Dave settled for non-league football and a career in the police force back in his native city. He retired in 1998.
