A barman at his father’s pub, the Squirrel Tavern in Farnborough, Charlie York had played in the same Camberley side as the Turner brothers in 1898. Having come to Southampton, in April 1901, for a trial in a Hampshire League game for the Reserves, Charlie was offered terms by Southern League Reading, that same month, and departed for Elm Park.

Football League clubs were soon taking note and Charlie joined First Division Derby County in the 1902 close-season, in which Archie Turner arrived from Southampton. Charlie outlasted Arthur and had the awesome responsibility, at the end of the 1902-03 season, of deputising, at inside-right, for the injured Steve Bloomer in the FA Cup Final, in which Derby lost 6-0 to Bury. Charlie then headed home – to Edinburgh via Sunderland – but was back at The Dell by December 1904. He was still only 21, yet he was evidently past his best. After just three Western League games, he went on a non-league journey that included two spells at South Farnborough, where he again linked up with the Turners.

He remained attached to the Squirrel throughout, first his wife, Ada ran it and then after she died he took over the reins and was still in situ when he died in 1955.
