The St Mary’s career of Bob MacDonald (sometimes spelt McDonald), the first Scot to play for the club, was limited to the last four games, including a Final replay, that the club played in the Hants Junior Cup (see above) – their first foray into competitive football – in 1887-88.

In the course of helping the club to lift their first-ever trophy, Bob scored, playing at inside-forward or centre-forward, both on his debut and in his last game, thus becoming, by definition, the first player ever to achieve that rare feat for the club.

Having been employed at the Ordnance Survey offices in London Road as a draughtsman, he left for London in 1888. That put an end to his playing career, although he returned to Southampton in the early 1890s, to continue working at the OS. He remained there until he retired to his native Inverness in 1924.
