When the Southampton management signed goalkeeper Bill Knight from Kingsbury Colliery, they were not aware that he was registered with Aston Villa, for whom he had never started. When Villa reported this indiscretion to the FA, Southampton were fined £5, but Knight was allowed to continue his career at The Dell. While having the vigilance and agility that the position demanded, Bill’s weakness was a tendency to come off his line too hastily. Having taken over from Arthur Brown, he lost his place, in turn, to George Kitchen and soon left.
