Sussex born but living in Sholing in 1901, according to the census, Bill George, was a right-winger who had pace and a good shot.  He spent three seasons at The Dell as an understudy to Archie Turner, and then Dick Evans. After averaging but one first-team appearance per season, he drifted out of the game in 1904 to enlist in the Royal Sussex Regiment on a five-year engagement. After that, he became a bricklayer’s labourer in Bognor until the outbreak of war, whereupon he rejoined his old regiment. In May 1917, he was reported “missing” in France.
