Bombardier Bill Buckenham was a multi-tasking footballer. A Hampshire County player, he held dual registrations with Woolwich Arsenal in the Football League and Southampton in the Southern League, while still turning out in friendlies for the Royal Artillery, with whom he was stationed at Aldershot. Having found the net on his first two outings for the Saints, he failed to add to his tally in his next four appearances. His Southern League days were over and his army career soon took precedence. Serving in the Great War on the north-west frontier of India with the Royal Field Artillery, Bill reached the rank of Battery Quarter-Master Sergeant. In later years, he became a lift-operator, although in 1939 his occupation was listed as a tool man in Woolwich.
